Police are investigating after a man painted pro-Palestinian graffiti on the Australian War Memorial in Canberra overnight.
Authorities said the man painted three areas of the Canberra monument about 1 a.m. Friday with pro-Palestinian slogans.
He was photographed on CCTV wearing a black jumper, covering his face and khaki trousers with dark patches on the knees.
Acting Inspector Lisa Broomhall said criminal damage to a national institution would not be tolerated.
“The police are very disappointed this morning to see a national institution that has special meaning to many being vandalized,” he said.
Police are searching for a man who painted three sections of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra around 1am on Friday (pictured).
The monument (pictured, stock) is the latest object of pro-Palestinian action since the war in Gaza began.
‘We would like to remind the community that while peaceful protest is part of a healthy democracy, criminal acts will not be tolerated.
“Police will investigate this matter thoroughly in an effort to ensure those involved are brought to justice.”
Monuments to Australia’s wartime efforts and colonial-era figures have been the target of pro-Palestine actions since the war in Gaza began.
Earlier this week, police were called to the statue of King George V in Melbourne after it was decapitated and covered in red paint.
The Vietnam War memorial in Canberra was also previously painted with red paint, with pro-Palestinian messages such as “all eyes on Rafah”.
