Supermarket shoppers are debating the exorbitant price of a Coles bakery item, with many claiming the treat is “not worth” the cost.
The Australian grocer recently launched two new bakery creations: a ‘Vanilla Koala Cake’ and a ‘Snag the Sausage Dog’ chocolate chunk, both retailing for $29.
While many foodies were intrigued by the imaginative designs, the price was immediately branded “unreasonable” and a “rip-off.”
“Almost $30 for a cake is outrageous,” said one on TikTok.
“For $29 it better be completely organic, sprinkled with chia seeds and sing the Australian anthem,” added another.

Coles also launched a dachshund-shaped chocolate sponge cake ($29).

Koala cake is a double layer vanilla sponge cake with jam and topped with sprinkles.
Both cakes are being distributed across Australia and are expected to be available nationwide on March 29.
However, shoppers were not impressed, with many pointing out that the koala cake is the same size as the $6.40 Coles mud cakes.
Coles usually sells other “celebration” cakes that are a step up from their usual mud cakes, costing between $16 and $31.
“I saw one of those cakes in Coles today and thought they were pretty poor and cost $29,” one woman wrote about the koala.
“The cake is nice but the price is not,” said another.
‘These are mass produced and kept frozen. $30 for an ice cream cake is absurd,” added one woman.

While many were intrigued by the designs, the price was called “unreasonable.”
Popular food vlogger Nectro Vlangos, who goes by the name Nectorious Daddy online, recently reviewed the “delicious” cakes.
“This is a really fun concept, and it’s similar to Colin the Caterpillar in the UK,” he said of the dachshund.

The Melbourne foodie praised the sweet soft chocolate caramel sponge cake.
Even though many criticized the price, many other buyers were quick to defend it.
‘Go order a koala cake from a baker; They will charge you 50 dollars. Calm down,” one said.
‘Oh my god, an Australian version of Colin! “I’m so excited: my life is complete,” wrote another.
“This will be perfect for my kids’ birthdays,” one mom wrote.
