A young homeowner who spoke openly about the difficulties she faced after purchasing her first property said she is tired of Boomers telling her to “stop complaining.”
Danielle Anstey, 26, and her partner bought their first house in Melbourne last year, but admitted it has been “pretty intense” since they got the keys.
Despite achieving what so many other Australians across the country are desperate to do, he admitted there are some downsides to home ownership.
The first six months were extremely hard.
‘We were used to renting and having a little more of our income that we could play with. Now, pretty much most of our salary goes towards the mortgage, so we’ve really had to sacrifice a lot,” Ms Anstey said. Yahoo Finance.

Anstey said there would be no joy in life if it weren’t for his partner’s parents living nearby.
Since the beginning of 2023, the Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates to 4.35 per cent, a rate that has been stagnant since November.
Anstey said it was extremely difficult to watch her friends travel to Europe for a few weeks or months at a time while she had to save every penny to pay her mortgage.
She said a lot of older people in her life were pressuring her to get on the real estate ladder, and after seeing how expensive houses were getting, she knew they had to make a move before they were priced out.
She’s tired of older Australians telling her how to deal with the financial challenges of home ownership.
“People don’t understand how hard it is now and the Boomers keep saying, ‘You’ve got to stop complaining, stop complaining, make some sacrifices,'” he said.
He said times have changed.
Anstey said many older people in her life were pressuring her to get on the property ladder, but she is tired of Boomers telling her to stop complaining (file image).
Ms Anstey explained that young people are now sacrificing their entire salary when in previous generations Australians were able to support a family while saving money for a house deposit.
She revealed that she has had to say “no” many times in recent months.
She added that it was painful to have to sacrifice things like buying birthday gifts for family and missing friends’ weddings because she couldn’t afford them.
Mrs Anstey and her partner have poured every penny into the mortgage since they bought the property, but they have barely made a dent.
The couple is only paying interest and their home loan is essentially the same as the one they started with, despite paying tens of thousands of dollars.
Anstey said it’s nearly impossible to save a lot of money and they’re constantly worried about a new bill, charge or fee that will take them back to zero.
‘I finally got $1,000 in my bank account, something I hadn’t had since I bought the house… I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s amazing.’ And then our rates went up and the money ran out again,” she said.
