Raducanu achieves victory, despite service problems

So, it looked like Emma Raducanu had made some alterations to her serve game heading into the Australian Open this week.

The British star got off to a good start in her tournament this afternoon, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6, 7-6.

Although she had to fight hard in the match, the 22-year-old played her best tennis to overcome Alexandrova in both tiebreaks.

But after making some adjustments, Raducanu seemed to struggle with his service game, double faulting 15 times.

Mail Sport’s Matthew Lambert sums up the British star’s great start.

Show time!

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gael Monfils put on a show for the fans who are currently putting on a show on court 3!

I can also hear the roars from the media center!

However, it was Monfils who took the victory 7-6 6-3 6-7 6-7 6-4.

Norrie: “I barely practiced”

Cam Norrie fell ill during last week’s warm-up event in Auckland, and the British star admitted after his loss to Matteo Berrettini that he had barely practiced before today’s match.

I haven’t been able to prepare as well as I could. I was quite sick in Auckland and then I came here. Barely practiced.

Honestly, I felt the ball very well. The preseason was excellent. It was a little unfortunate with the timing. I definitely gave myself the best chance. I hit the wall after an hour and a bit. I couldn’t stay alert on the court.

It’s disappointing. Yes, it is what it is. The most important thing is to get my health back to 100 percent and get some rest. It’s hard to sustain that today.

What do professional tennis players eat before a match?

Frances Tiafoe surprised some fans yesterday when she appeared to vomit on court during her first round victory against Arthur Rinderknech.

He put the timing down to being “overhydrated” having “mixed a lot of electrolytes” before claiming he hadn’t eaten since 10 o’clock, before playing for four hours.

It demonstrated just how grueling tennis really is, with professional players placing great emphasis on their nutrition and hydration to ensure they perform to the highest standards on the court.

In fact, Emma Raducanu just revealed what she eats before a game to keep functioning at her best.

It is a very early wake-up call. I think it’s hard for me to eat when I open my eyes first thing in the morning.

In fact, I was pretty light this morning. I just had some berries and a coffee before practicing. After practice, I only ate toast, like plain toast with honey and banana. Pure carbohydrate loading.

I couldn’t stomach some rice and salmon. After this I’ll be sure to get my salmon and enjoy it during the day!

Raducanu: ‘My service had a mind of its own!’

Emma Raducanu spoke after her victory about the changes she made to her service game ahead of the Australian Open.

Yeah, I’m honestly not sure what I changed in my service today. I think it had a mind of its own…

I’ll be sure to reflect, look at that, and get back to you.

Raducanu would commit 15 double faults, and while his percentage points won on his first serve stood at a solid 67 percent, his return on his second serve was much lower at 30 percent.

I think in the first set I made a lot of good first serves. I got some aces. At the same time he committed (many) double faults.

I think as the balls got heavier it was a lot harder. As I think more kept coming, it wasn’t easy to refocus, but I knew that even if I was down, I would reap big benefits. It was good to be able to rely on other parts of my game today that I know are pretty strong.

I’m very proud that I didn’t let that affect me too much and let the game get away from me.

It’s a hot day here at Melbourne Park!

Good afternoon (or good morning if you wake up in the UK)!

It’s a hot day here in Melbourne, it’s 26ºC but it feels much hotter out there.

In my travels this morning I’ve seen fans running through sprinklers and long lines in front of the peach ice cream stand next to the Kia Arena.

It’s been a busy day on the court too!

British fans will be excited to know that Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6, 7-6.

We also have some big matches later today with newly engaged couple Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur in action!

But first, let’s recap Emma Raducanu’s win today… here’s the moment she took the win!
