Victorian premier slams potential tennis disruption

Good afternoon and some news that has just arrived at Melbourne Park for you.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has criticized any possible plans by protesters to disrupt the Australian Open men’s singles final on Sunday afternoon.

It comes as rumors have been circulating around the tennis venue for days that some Australia Day protesters were planning to disrupt proceedings on Sunday, January 26.

Protests have been planned for Melbourne’s CBD, but organizers have said there are no plans to reach Melbourne Park and they will follow the same route used in the past.

Allan, however, called any attempt to cause trouble at tennis “disgusting” before adding that a large police presence will be seen around the city and the tennis venue to control crowds.

About 30,000 people are expected to take to the streets on Australia Day amid protests.

Allan called on all parties to show respect, regardless of their stance, on Australia Day.

“I think we can all find space in our hearts to respect and understand him,” the prime minister said.

‘Respect also goes both ways. We have to make sure that those who want to recognize the day in their own way have the space to do so.”

Rip:MATTHEW LAMBERT: New update as concerns grow over Novak Djokovic’s fitness

A kind of update on Novak Djokovic’s physical condition. After a suspected hamstring injury in his quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz, he admitted he was “worried”. He was not at the venue on Wednesday and after training at 2pm today, his name suddenly disappeared from the calendar, raising fears over his fitness.

We’re told he didn’t practice at Melbourne Park, and while he may have hit out of position somewhere, he likely gave his injury two full days of rest.

The Serbian will train tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. before facing Alexander Zverev at 2:30 p.m.

Australia Day has been a big topic of conversation in tennis over the past few days.

Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said this week the tournament will have a strong presence on Australia Day on Sunday.

The men’s singles final will take place on Sunday, with Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev fighting for a place in the main event.

“I am proud of the fact that we are an event that has always been and always will be inclusive, diverse and will offer equal opportunities for all,” he said.

‘You will see the welcome and recognition of the Australian of the Year, on the green and gold field, and also the Australian flag.

‘We will have previous ceremonies and special guests that we are going to announce and the Australian national anthem.

“This year Australia Day falls on the last day of the event, so we anticipate having some recognition.”

But some have criticized the plans, including former Australian tennis star Sam Groth, who called for “more than just flags and the national anthem”.

Groth, 37, retired in 2018 but now works as deputy leader of the Victorian Liberal Party.

“(It would be) absolutely more appropriate to have something more important than just the flags and… singing the national anthem,” he said.

“Yes, we can recognize some of the defects of our country, but give the opportunity to those who want to celebrate it to come to the place.”

In the past, Tennis Australia removed formal recognition of the national day, amid pressure to change its date.

“We are aware that there are different points of view, and at the Australian Open we are inclusive and respectful of everyone,” a Tennis Australia spokesperson had previously said.

“We recognize the historical importance and deep spiritual connection our First Peoples have to this land, and we recognize it with a Welcome to Country on the stadium screens before the daily day and night sessions.”
