Australian leaders unleash their hair at the annual Winter Ball

Politicians and journalists in Canberra are rarely seen face to face, but it was a different story at the annual Midwinter Ball party.

Considered the largest social event of the year in the nation's capital, guests began arriving at the House of Parliament from 5 p.m.

Usually organized in the middle of winter, the gala night was delayed until the spring of this year due to the renovations that closed the Great Hall in the House of Parliament.

Australian music singer Jessica Mauboy was the star performer, with healthy people also entertained by veteran comedian Bob Downe.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was absent from the event, and decided to spend the night sending a sarcastic tweet about the Minister of Internal Affairs, Peter Dutton, while former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was not present either.

The wife of the deputy leader of the Greens Adam Bandt, Claudia Perkins, made a statement with her appearance, shaving a protest message on the side of her head.

As part of some of the auction items on display, Prime Minister Scott Morrison agreed to prepare and serve a dinner at Kirribilli House with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten offering a talk about a glass or two of wine with the vice leader Tanya Plibersek.

Other guests who dusted off their tuxedos and cocktail dresses were actor Sam Neill, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Labor Senator Kristina Keneally, Shadow Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese and Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr. Turnbull stayed away from the event, and decided to call his leader, Mr. Dutton, on Twitter.

The former Liberal leader said Mr. Dutton's eligibility to sit in parliament should be referred to the High Court.

"What I have done to Scott Morrison and other colleagues is that given the uncertainty about the eligibility of Peter Dutton, recognized by the Attorney General, he should be referred to the High Court, as was Barnaby (Joyce), to clarify the matter" . Mr. Turnbull said.

Mr. Dutton's eligibility to serve as a deputy was questioned after the emergence of two child care centers owned by his family trust that had received more than $ 5.6 million in grants.

Ms. Bishop's absence came after she resigned from liberal banking amid claims of intimidation during the party leadership crisis.

In previous years, the cost of the extravagant dress of the leader of the Liberal Party was often a topic of conversation.

The high profile couple Barnaby Joyce and Vikki Campion also chose to stay at home.

His decision comes after Joyce and his wife, Natalia, who is now separated, appeared together at the dance last year, and the former deputy prime minister waved his whip through the cameras.

The Green deputy, Adam Bandt, attended with his wife, Claudia Perkins, days after being criticized for describing her as & # 39; & # 39; hot & # 39; & # 39; in a Facebook post.

Ms. Perkins shaved an anti-tank message that said "CARBON MATA & # 39; on one side of his head, besides wearing a necklace with the same words.

On Thursday night, Bandt posted a picture of him and Mrs. Perkins on a night out, describing her as his "hot wife."

The couple was attending a Dark Emu dance adaptation in Melbourne.

He copped a barrage of criticism on social media after publishing the photo.

"Women in the public eye are sufficiently sexually objectified and you are alienating your progressive support base by contributing to that, be more measured in your social media posts, this is not a public statement, it's a private statement," said one person.

Another added: "It seems that you are objectifying your wife for public consumption." Feel proud of her, call her adorable, intelligent or even beautiful, but why promote her in this way in public? Unworthy, disappointing.

Ms. Perkins also commented on the photo to defend her husband.

"It's good for everyone, I'm completely fine with this publication! It was just a reference of how hot we are for each other, even after 11 years together," he said.
