A popular coffee chain has announced that some of its Australian stores will stop accepting cash, marking a major change.
Gloria Jean will test card-only commerce next week, according to 9News.
“We will not be accepting cash. Beginning September 11, we will only accept electronic funds transfers. We appreciate your understanding and continued support,” reads a sign outside one of the stores.
A spokesman for Gloria Jean’s owner, Retail Food Group, said the move was a result of changing customer preferences.
“We believe that going cashless will not only create a safer environment for our staff, but will also streamline operations, allowing us to serve our customers more efficiently,” the spokesperson told 9News.
‘The vast majority of Gloria Jean’s locations are owned and operated by our valued franchise partners, who set their policies regarding cash handling.’
The company first opened in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1979.
The first store was opened by Jean Kvetko, but the company has since expanded and operates stores in 33 countries.
The first Australian store opened in Sydney in 1996.
