Will Pucovski has retired from professional cricket after years of concussion problems.

According to 9News, the 26-year-old made the decision to step away from the sport several months ago, but his retirement was only formalised by Cricket Victoria this week.

One of Australia’s most talented young prodigies of this century, his career has been regularly disrupted by injuries and concussions.

He hit 62 on his Test debut against India in January 2021 but was ruled out of the next match after suffering a shoulder injury on the field.

The Victorian has also stepped away from the game at different times for mental health reasons, admitting last month that they were likely related to his concussions.

“I kind of relate the mental health thing to my first concussion… which was when I was about 15 or 16,” Pucovski said on the Vic State Cricket Podcast.

“I have a lot of concussion symptoms that over a period of seven or eight years never went away.”

9News reporter Tom Morris said of Pucovski’s latest news: ‘As a batsman, he blossomed at a young age, scoring back-to-back double tons for Victoria.

“This confirmation is not only sad for him and for Victorian cricket, but also for Australian cricket.”
