A $ 1.99 tub of hummus has been crowned the best on the market, beating popular supermarket brands that cost more than double the price.

Australian consumer experts from CHOICE have posted 27 classic hummus products from brands such as Obela, Black Swan, Yumi’s and Chris’.

In a blind tasting test, a panel of five judges – including a prolific culinary jury member and two top chefs – rated the dips based on taste, aroma, texture and appearance.

The dips were placed in number-coded containers and given to each expert in random order.

Of the products tested, Aldi Deli Originals Fresh Traditional Style Hommus ($ 1.99) came out on top after achieving the highest score of 78 percent.

Black Swan Hommus ($ 3.50) finished in second place after earning 76 percent, followed by Monjay Mezza Hummos Dip ($ 4.29) with 73 percent.

Copperpot Hommus ($ 3.50) and Obela Hommus Classic ($ 4) were in fourth place with a rating of 71 percent.

Dari’s Table Mediterranean Hummus ($ 5) rounded out the top six hummus at 70 percent.

The ratings consist of 70 percent flavor (45 percent flavor, 40 percent texture, 10 percent appearance, and 5 percent aroma) and 30 percent nutrition, based on the product’s Health Star Rating.

According to the jury, a good hummus should have a ‘smooth, creamy, velvety texture’ with ‘no lumps’, an excellent balance of ingredients and a ‘nutty profile with citrus highlights’.

For a traditional hummus, the experts said consumers should “taste” mostly “chickpeas, tahini, and lemon juice – and” not get a massive blow of garlic. ”

“Interestingly, only about half of the products we tested contain lemon juice, and all but a few garlic,” said the jury.

During the test, the experts noted that some of the dips were not tasty if they were sweet, had ‘very sour’, had ‘fishy overtones’ or had a bitter aftertaste. O
