An Australia Post contractor has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing an iPhone 16 worth more than $6,000 from a postal shipment.

Police arrested the 34-year-old man at about 6.40am on Thursday in Forbes, central New South Wales, and charged him at Parkes Police Station.

The man allegedly stole the parcel from the Parkes Post Office at around 9am on Tuesday.

He put the package in his own delivery truck.

Australia Post was later alerted that one of the phones, which was due to be delivered on Friday, had been activated for use.

The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be launched on Friday.

New South Wales Police were notified and began their investigations into the disappearance of the phones.

Investigations led police to Forbes on Thursday, where they stopped a delivery van and arrested the 34-year-old man.

Later that morning, police responded to a home on Federation Boulevard in Forbes and found the three other cell phones.

The man was charged with a robbery-related offence while at Parkes Police Station.

“The man was taken to Parkes Police Station and charged with stealing property as an employee/servant worth more than $5,000 and less than $15,000,” police said.

The 34-year-old man was granted conditional bail to appear before Parkes Local Court on Thursday 17 October 2024.

Daily Mail Australia understands the contractor is no longer providing services to Australia Post.

Australia Post confirmed it had been informed of the charges.
