Australia on tsunami watch after severe Pacific earthquake with urgent warning for residents of Lord Howe Island

Australia is on tsunami watch after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake near the Loyalty Islands, the Bureau of Meteorology has said.

There is a potential tsunami threat to Lord Howe Island.

Lorde Howe Island is located 600 km immediately east of Port Macquarie, with a population of 382 people.

The island has strict restrictions on the number of tourists allowed to stay there, welcoming only 400 at a time.

Tourism on the island exploded in popularity after Chris Hemsworth, his wife Elsa Pataky and his brother Liam Hemsworth posted photos from a family holiday there in 2020.
