  • Telstra launches Australia's first 5G smartphone and modem on 28 May
  • Both devices have much faster access to download speeds than the existing devices
  • Telstra offers 5G coverage in 35 Australian cities in the next 12 months

Telstra is launching Australia's first 5G-compatible smartphone and modem next week.

The company is selling the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the HTC 5G Hub modem in its stores from May 28 – almost seven years after Australia's first 4G smartphone was released to customers in 2012.

The launch will make Australia the third country after the US and South Korea, where these fifth generation devices are available to consumers.

The Galaxy S10 5G has a colorful 6.7-inch Cinematic Dynamic AMOLED display, a larger and faster charging battery and a professional camera setting with six lenses, according to the company description.

Telstra has not yet announced the price of the smartphone, but plans to sell the modem schedule from $ 70 a month, according to a Herald Sun report.

With these devices, customers can access download speeds 10 to 20 times faster than currently available smartphones and modems on the market.

Andrew Penn, CEO of Telstra, said the telecom company will launch its new mobile subscriptions at the end of June.

& # 39; To begin with, when we launch our new plans at the end of June, we make 5G available for a minimum of 12 months so that anyone with a compatible device can try 5G when in a 5G coverage area, & # 39; he said.

& # 39; Once this free trial period is over, customers who are part of our two best subscriptions have 5G connectivity in their subscription at no extra cost and customers on our other plans can add 5G connectivity for $ 15 a month. & # 39;

Mr. Penn said that Telstra was rolling out 5G in 10 cities and the company plans to offer coverage in at least 35 cities in the next 12 months.

& # 39; All Telstra 5G devices will work in our 5G and 4GX coverage to offer our customers our best possible mobile speeds, & # 39; he said.

& # 39; The launch of 5G brings progress in mobile gaming, virtual reality experiences, HD video conferencing and other apps that haven't been thought of yet.
