It also marked the debut of skateboarding as a sport at the Olympics, leaving Palmer etched into sports history forever.

Palmer’s gold medal triumph equals Australia’s best ever return to an Olympics, with 17 to date.

An emotional Palmer was harassed by his fellow athletes at the skate park after his exploits in the final.

After taking the win, Palmer covered his mouth as the enormity of what he had just accomplished began to sink in.

“It’s an absolute honor,” Palmer told NBC.

“I’ve been training for so long. I’ve been working myself to death for a long time.’

Australian team-mate Kieran Woolley said it was ‘sick’ that Palmer had delivered on the world stage.

“We’re in a pretty strict lockdown, but we can sink a few beers,” he said.

“I’m so honored to even call him my buddy.”

Woolley described Palmer as a formidable competitor who “took it to the next level.”

It’s legendary – Australia’s first Olympic skateboard gold. What a beast.

“He’s a super cool guy. We push each other and skate better and better.’
