Aussies are stunned by the outrageous price a Sydney pub is charging for a pint

An overpriced pint of beer has sent Sydneysiders into a frenzy, with them claiming the cost of living has simply “gone too far”.

Footage of a card reader asking for $22 a pint at one of the northern beaches’ most popular hotels went viral on Sunday.

The beer lover captioned the clip: “This is getting fucked up.”

The expensive beer, published in Bondi Lines‘, led locals to denounce that the state of the city’s entertainment scene is “worse than that of an airport.”

Many said they would prefer to stay home and have a drink with their friends, as their money would stretch them much further.

‘A pint or a six-pack. No wonder pubs are closing,” said one commenter.

A six-pack of inexpensive beer at a liquor store can be purchased for between $18 and $22 in the city.

“Not long ago, that ($22) was equivalent to half a case (of beer)… at this price, a pint will be like $25,” added a like-minded consumer.

“Daylight mugging, there’s a bottle of soju right there,” said another.

Others couldn’t believe the increase in drink prices.

“I remember thinking $18 for a cocktail was expensive,” one woman wrote.

‘Oh my God, (that’s) the same price at the airport. This is ridiculous,’ said another.

“Cooked,” one simply added.

Others downplayed the dire situation.

“That’s because we are in a sad hour,” one joked.

“This is what motivated me to stop drinking,” said another.

Further increases in beer excise duty are expected to hit Australians on February 3, while Australians are already feeling the impact of inflation.

Many pointed the finger at beer taxes.

“(It’s) not necessarily the pub’s fault, (the) cost of buying and selling is ridiculous with the multiple taxes on alcohol,” said one.

‘Thanks to government taxes on alcohol. Pure greed,” added another.

The federal government’s bi-annual increase in the alcohol tax due in February could see the price of a pint rise by an extra dollar.

Customers who buy a case will also end up throwing around $20 in total at the government, the Australian Brewers Association said.

According to estimates, the alcohol excise duty will raise around $7.86 billion in revenue this financial year.

Many commentators argued that Sydneysiders should vote with their feet, or rather with their Ubers.

‘Just don’t go to places that charge that amount. “They charge that amount because people actually pay that amount, which makes them think they can get away with it,” one wrote.

‘They only keep charging this because all you zombies keep paying!’ added another.

‘Stop paying for drinks at (exorbitant) prices! You’re all smarter than this.’
