Trickett (pictured) was left furious after a family friend recently asked her daughter Poppy about her weight.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist (pictured with daughters Poppy, Edwina, Brontë and husband Luke) believes questions about weight make children believe their “value as a human being” lies in how thin they are. .
‘We need to improve as a society in the way we talk to our young children. We need to improve as a society in the way we talk about ourselves.
‘Yes, we have to do better in front of our children in the way we talk to ourselves. We need to improve the way we talk to ourselves about our bodies in alone time, because that will influence the way we talk to our children about their bodies.
‘She is eight years. I mean, that’s how it happens, right? We create an environment where our value as human beings is based on how we look and how thin we are.
“I will do everything in my power to protect my children from that and love their bodies just the way they are, because they are amazing.”
Trickett’s post struck a chord with her followers, garnering nearly 5,500 likes and many supportive comments.
“Thank you for sharing this story, your kids feel blessed that you show them a different way,” one commenter wrote.
The 39-year-old’s Instagram clip (pictured) earned her plenty of support.
‘There are some real truths in this and I can say that I was really touched after a fellow student told my 7-year-old daughter that she had fat legs last year. The damage this has already done, wanting to modify her character in a video game so that she is skinny,’ another responded.
“Heartbreaking on so many levels… but like others have said, she is so lucky to have you as a mom,” wrote a third.
Trickett has previously shared her concerns about her most recent pregnancy with her son Alfie, which she predicted would be the most “challenging” of her four children.
She also opened up about her history of postpartum depression after welcoming her third child, Brontë Rose, in 2020.
“I think any time you have such a change in life, it can always be quite discouraging,” he said.
“Especially for me, knowing that I’ve had a history of postpartum depression, and it’s certainly something we’re very aware of.”
When Poppy was just four months old, Trickett said the extreme lack of sleep caused her mental health to decline.
The lack of sleep made him angry and it got to the point where he was yelling at his daughter.
Trickett (pictured with her daughters) previously opened up about her struggle with postpartum depression to help other women struggling with the condition.
“It’s almost like I had a mental break, and I had a moment where I completely lost control with Poppy, I was yelling at her,” he said.
‘The progression of extreme sleep deprivation that she put everyone through just accelerated my mental health and mental illness to the point where I became scared.
“I couldn’t imagine being an eight-month-old baby and being yelled at,” she said.
It was at that moment that the swimming legend decided he needed help.
Trickett used her memoir, Beneath the Surface, to help other women understand the symptoms and warning signs of the condition.
