Aussie Olympics fans furious as Matildas’ Sam Kerr not given vital penalty after losing to Sweden in

Aussie Olympics fans furious as the Matildas are denied a crucial win in their opening game after VERY questionable referee decision

Australian viewers were confused after Matildas superstar Sam Kerr was denied a seemingly obvious penalty in a controversial 4-2 group stage loss to Sweden at the Tokyo Olympics.

Kerr had already scored a header for her side when she appeared to be stumbled in the first half by Swedish defender Hanna Glas with the score at 1-1.

She went down just meters from the goal, but Brazilian referee Edina Alves rejected a penalty and then asked for a video review.

Kerr’s appeal was dismissed and the decision not to award the penalty was upheld by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Sweden won 4-2, despite Kerr scoring another header from teammate Caitlin Foord.

The decision not to give the penalty deprived Kerr of the chance to score her first hat-trick of the tournament.

“Sam Kerr robbed of a clear penalty there,” one fan tweeted.

“That’s as clear as it gets, are the referee and the VAR on another planet?” asked another outraged fan.

‘Sam Kerr just kicked her right foot and apparently that’s allowed? Cool. Horrible refereeing,” said one.

“Sam Kerr was completely knocked over and no call was made!” a fed up fan tweeted.

Kerr later had another chance to clear the ball from the penalty spot, but Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl was too good and stopped Kerr’s chances of getting her hat-trick and saved another shot on goal from the Australian captain.

Sweden previously shocked football fans around the world after beating the top United States team 3-0.

The Matildas are not yet out of the finals and will face powerhouse Team USA on Tuesday.
