A newly married Australian tourist in Bali drowned after being swept out to sea by a strange wave.

Jacob Vennix, 32, and his new wife, Kimberly Ann, 38, were celebrating their honeymoon on Pasut beach, about 30 kilometers west of Denpasar, when tragedy struck on Monday.

The couple were swimming when at around 3.50pm Mr Vennix became trapped in a rip.

‘About four in the afternoon, Jacob was swept by the current into the sea. His wife, Kimberly Ann, called for help immediately,” said Tabanan police spokesperson I Gusti Made Berata.

A local fisherman rushed to help Mr Vennix in his boat, but had difficulty reaching him due to the changing currents.

When he was finally able to help the Australian on board, a large wave capsized the boat.

«Later, the wave dragged the victim to the beach. Some locals and the victim’s wife who were waiting on the beach immediately tried to save the victim,” Berata said.

“The victim’s condition was unconscious.”
