An Australian man who earns $150,000 a year as the owner of a home security business has revealed why the industry is suddenly booming.
The Brisbane man, who was interviewed by jobs app Getahead, said an increasing number of Australians are purchasing security systems in response to recent crime waves.
While adding that rising crime rates were “unfortunate”, the man said his industry was “absolutely” booming because of it.
“Unfortunately, this really helps my industry and helps my business grow,” he said.
‘Also, on the other hand, I make people feel safe and secure.
“It’s a double-edged sword.”
The business owner said he earned between $80,000 and $150,000 a year installing security systems in Brisbane homes.
But he had some advice for Australians eager to enter the workforce.
Advertised salaries in the home security industry rose a whopping 15.4 per cent to $93,536 last year, while crime rates rose in almost all states and territories (stocks).
“Move, have fun, go and travel,” he said.
‘Travelling was the best thing that gave me confidence, made me want to go places in life.
“Go out and live.”
Working in the industry includes installing and maintaining security systems such as CCTV cameras and alarm or motion sensors in homes and businesses.
It also requires registration from an Australian Communications and Media Authority-approved provider and a security installer license from a state-approved provider.
The Australian Security Industry Association estimates the private security industry generates around $11 billion a year with around 180,000 employees nationwide.
Queensland experienced higher rates of assault, sexual assault, robbery, blackmail, burglary and motor vehicle theft in 2023, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
As many as 18,210 people reported incidents of vehicle theft during the year, the highest number of victims recorded since 2000.

ABS data revealed similar increases in recorded crime rates in almost all Australian states and territories, with sexual assaults reaching their highest level in 31 years.
ABS head of crime and justice statistics Samantha McNally said there were 36,318 sexual assault victim-survivors recorded by police in 2023.
“Taking population growth into account, the rate of recorded sexual assault victim-survivors has increased from 126 per 100,000 people last year to 136 victim-survivors per 100,000 people,” he said.
Salaries advertised on Seek for positions in the industry rose a whopping 15.4 percent to $93,536 last year, according to yahoo.
It was the third-largest increase of the year, behind only operations team members whose salaries rose 21.2 percent and support engineers 17.3 percent.
Seek’s head of market data and client analytics for Australia and New Zealand, Leigh Broderick, said key industries saw massive pay rises last year, including education, infrastructure and trade and manufacturing.
“The growing demand for these workers, coupled with the ongoing talent shortage and willingness to offer higher salaries for more specialized and technical positions, is likely driving further wage increases in these positions,” Mr. Broderick said.
