Aussie athlete confesses to using the word ‘handball’ at an international conference

Aussie woman reveals the ONLY slang word she used at an international conference that was greeted with blank stares: ‘Don’t other places in the world say this?’

  • Pole vaulter Amie Elizabeth, 26, has questioned Australian slang on TikTok
  • The young Australian attended a conference and used the word ‘handball’
  • She was received with empty looks by her colleagues who came from abroad
  • Amie wanted to understand if the term was only popular Down Under

A young Australian athlete has wondered if a particular phrase she uses is used by ‘Aussies Only’ or if it’s known outside of our home on the island.

Amie Elizabeth, 26, took to TikTok on Monday with her question after attending a conference where she mingled with people from abroad.

The handball hand gesture is also mandatory when saying this. What do other countries say to pass something on to someone else if it’s not about handball?’ She captioned her video.

Amie went on to explain: ‘Is it Australian to say you’re going to ‘handball’ something to someone else? Do other places in the world say that or is it a footy thing?

“Because I was speaking at a conference and I said, ‘I’m going to pass that question on to someone else’ and the international people looked at me like I had four eyes.”

Urban Dictionary defines ‘handball’ as passing work to another colleague or avoiding work altogether.

Her followers were quick to suggest that the phrase is often associated with AFL – Australian Football League – because players within the game are “handball.”

Is the term ‘handball’ just for Australians?

“It’s not something Australian, it’s something from Melbourne. The rest didn’t care,” one explained, pointing to the fact that AFL is hugely popular in Melbourne.

‘Yeah, people in the UK don’t understand either,’ said another.

But a third added, “I’ve never heard of that, more like taking it off.”

Some of her fans tried to argue that AFL was the only sport in the world that allowed players to play handball, but this was quickly destroyed.

“I mean, I work in sports, so for most it at least made sense,” Amie said.
