AT&T and Verizon customers reported problems making 911 calls in several US states on Tuesday.
At least 24 states are experiencing problems affecting thousands of Americans from North Dakota to Illinois to New York.
DownDetector, a site that monitors online outages, shows that the outages occurred around 12:26 p.m. ET, but spiked about four hours later.
Customers also reported dropped calls, no internet connection, and the inability to hear the person on the other end of the line.
This is a developing story…there will be more updates to come.

While the AT&T issue started in the afternoon, it appears Verizon customers have been dealing with issues all day.
User reports of the Verizon outage are largely concentrated in the Northeast, including New York, Boston, but also Chicago and Detroit appear to be affected.
AT&T, however, has more scattered problems in Tampa, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and Phoenix.
It is not yet known what is causing the problems and how many people have been affected.
