An Atlanta sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a burglar after his Ring doorbell notified him that his home had been broken into and tools stolen.

The shooting happened early Saturday morning in Fulton County as the sheriff’s deputy returned home and tracked the burglar in his car as the thief fled the property on foot.

An altercation ensued in a wooded area, with the deputy shooting the burglar dead. Neither has been identified, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the murder.

The home invasion and fatal shooting come amid rising crime rates in Atlanta, where 140 burglaries and 58 robberies were reported in December 2021, as well as nine murders and 11 rapes during the same period.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the Fulton County deputy, who has not been named Monday, returned home on Springside Drive Saturday after midnight to find the burglar running away with tools and other items, the GBI said.

The officer, dressed in uniform, was followed until the suspect stepped off a dirt road into a forest.

The agency says the officer left his personal car and followed the man into the woods, where the two got into an argument and the sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect. CBS46.

It is not clear at this time whether the suspect was armed.

Atlanta Police Department officers, responding to a 911 call, reached the deputy who performed CPR on the fatally injured burglary suspect.

The victim of the shooting was then transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The GBI, which is investigating the shooting, says the officer sustained a minor ankle injury during his altercation with the intruder.

The back door of the deputy’s house had been kicked in and the items found in the woods had been taken from his home.

Just over 24 hours after the deputy-involved murder, a British doctor visiting his girlfriend in Atlanta was fatally shot in the head by a stray bullet.

Police said Dr Matthew Willson, a 31-year-old astrophysicist, was killed as a result of someone recklessly firing a firearm outside his girlfriend’s home in the upscale Brookhaven section of Atlanta.
