Indian Super League champions ATK Mohun Bagan will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giants starting next season, Sanjiv Goenka, president of RPSG Group, announced on Saturday.
The RPSG Group owns a majority stake in the club. Goenka made the announcement moments after his team beat Bengaluru FC on penalties to win the 2022-23 ISL crown.
“It’s a very simple but substantive announcement. That’s from next season, the club will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giants. We are removing ATK. Well, it was something that was on the cards. I was waiting for the win to announce it.” Goenka said.
The club was originally called Atlético de Kolkata, and then ATK, from 2014 to 2020. They were the most successful club in the ISL at the time with three titles. In 2020, Mohun Bagan, who was in the I-League, merged with ATK.
RPSG Group, owner and manager of ATK FC, has acquired majority shares in Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited. The merged club came into being on June 1, 2020, with RPSG Group owing 80 percent, while Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited owned the remaining 20 percent.
ATK Mohun Bagan finished runners-up in the 2020-21 ISL season and then represented India on the continental stage – in the group stage of the AFC Cup. They lost in the tiebreaker semifinal between zones.
In their second season, they finished third at the end of the League stage and lost to eventual champions Hyderabad FC in the semi-final. They once again qualified for the AFC Group group stage and topped their group, but once again lost in the semi-final of the inter-zone playoffs.
Led by Juan Ferrando this season, the club won its first major silver medal since the merger by clinching the 2022-23 ISL title.
