One person was killed and dozens injured on Thursday when a stampede broke out outside a soccer stadium in Iraq hours before the Gulf Cup final, security and medical sources said.
Thousands of fans without tickets had gathered outside the stadium in Basra, the main city in southern Iraq, since dawn, hoping to see the rare international home game between Iraq and Oman, which was due to start at 7:00 p.m. local (16:00 GMT).
“There has been one death and dozens of minor injuries,” a doctor said. An Interior Ministry official gave the same figure.
