At least 12 gunmen were killed by the Mexican military in a shootout in Mexico near the U.S. border, officials say.

The soldiers were patrolling in the municipality of Miguel Alemán, on the border with Texas, when they were attacked by “armed civilians,” the security agency of the state of Tamaulipas reported in a statement published in X.

The agency did not respond to questions about whether any soldiers were killed or wounded in the shooting.

The state of Tamaulipas has several organized crime groups, whose main activities include human trafficking and drug trafficking, authorities say.

Authorities said they seized 12 long weapons, cartridges and magazines of various calibers.

No additional information has been released and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Monday.

The Mexican military told The Associated Press they had no information about the shooting.
