Aston Villa has announced the surprise signing of Southampton striker Danny Ings.
Ings, 29, scored 14 goals for both club and country last season and has become Villa’s newest signing this summer.
With talisman Jack Grealish on the cusp of joining Manchester City, Villa has had a busy window and Dean Smith has praised the attack for Ings.
Aston Villa has announced the signing of Danny Ings from Southampton to a three-year contract
“Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored everywhere,” said Smith.
“He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team.
‘I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great Club.’
Villa boss Dean Smith has praised Ings as a ‘top professional’ and is ‘happy’ with the blow
Ings shone during his stint at St Mary’s, scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances for Southampton after switching from Liverpool in 2018.
With just one year left on his contract, Ings has opted to move to Villa for an undisclosed fee rather than renew.
Southampton confirmed Ings’ departure by simply tweeting: ‘Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has accepted an offer from Aston Villa for striker Danny Ings.’
Villa has already brought in Leon Bailey of Bayer Leverkusen, Norwich’s Emi Buendia, and secured a return for Ashley Young for the new season.
