Jhon Durán (left) came off the bench to score Aston Villa's winning goal on a historic European night

Aston Villa claimed a historic victory in the Champions League’s return to Villa Park on Wednesday night, beating German giants Bayern Munich 1-0.

Jhon Durán proved he is the King of Chaos for Unai Emery when he scored after coming off the bench once again, scoring late as his team held on for a shock victory, but how did he qualify?

Meanwhile, Emiliano Martínez was the star of the show as he came to the rescue at the end, and his performance earned him a solid rating from Mail Sport’s TOM COLLOMOSSE at Villa Park.

As for Villa’s opponents, however, it was the same old story for Harry Kane, who became frustrated in the game, and that was reflected in his rating.

Aston Villa (4-4-2)

Emiliano Martínez – 8.5

He had little to do in the first half until he jumped to his right to deflect Michael Olise’s attempt and then made even better saves from Serge Gnabry and Kane late on.

Ezri Konsa – 8

Facing a client as difficult as Kingsley Coman, Konsa showed how good a defender he is one-on-one, although he does not like to play as a right-back.

Diego Carlos – 6.5

Not many centre-backs would choose to face Kane instead of Liam Delap, but he found it easier against the England captain than the Ipswich man last Sunday.

Pau Torres – 7.5

Disappointed to see his goal disallowed for offside, the Spaniard enjoys the European stage, where his physical fragility is rarely exposed. Good ball for Durán’s goal.

Lucas Digne – 7

The left-back made a good start in both attack and defence, although Villa’s high line left no room for error and there were a couple of tricky moments.

Jaden Philogene – 7.5

Emery showed great confidence starting with Leon Bailey and Philogene repaid him with a mature performance.

Amadou Onana – 6.5

He had his hands on his knees at one point in the first half after doing a lot of work in midfield.

Youri Tielemans – 7.5

The Belgian, Villa’s best player during the first weeks of this season, once again delivered, highlighted by a brilliant turn away from Joshua Kimmich.

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Disconnected due to offside in the play that caused Torres’ shot to be disallowed for offside and he had to leave injured midway through the first half.

Morgan Rogers – 7

Vague during the first exchanges, he entered the game and soon tested Bayern by collecting the ball deep and attacking their back four.

Ollie Watkins – 6.5

He received two fouls from Dayot Upamecano which should have caused the Bayern player to receive two warnings. He made sure to take advantage of the few opportunities he had to cause problems for the visitors.

Substitutes

Leon Bailey (by Ramsey 27) – 5

He gave the ball away twice shortly after coming on and was brutally booted just 33 minutes later.

Ian Maatsen (for Bailey, 60) – 6

Sent by Uani Emery to play in front of Digne and shore up Villa’s left wing.

Ross Barkley (for Onana, 60) – 6

Onana had made a big change and seemed to be struggling when the Englishman replaced him.

Jhon Durán (by Watkins, 70) – 7.5

Facing the future King, it was another unforgettable night for Villa’s King of Chaos.

Manager

Unai Emery – 7

He ordered his team to let Bayern have the ball for most of the match and to make counterattacks when they got the ball back. It almost worked.

Bayern Munich (3-1-3-3)

Manuel Neuer – 5

A dubious pass went straight to Digne and the Villa fans urged their man to fire in from 70 yards. Everything at sea for Torres’ disallowed goal and Durán’s goal nowhere to be seen.

Joshua Kimmich – 7.5

Villa was unable to control his passes or movements during the first period and remains one of the most intelligent players in European football.

Dayot Upamecano – 6

He struggled to handle Watkins and was lucky not to be sent off, somehow escaping a booking for dragging the England forward as he tried to walk away.

Kim Min Jae – 6.5

Crucial jump at the far post to prevent Watkins from directing Villa in front. Solid in defence, but perhaps not the on-ball centre-back Vincent Kompany needs for this style of play.

Manuel Neuer went to sea for the disallowed goal against Villa and the one who stood up was nowhere to be seen.

Despite ending up on the losing side, Joshua Kimmich showed why he is one of the smartest players in the game.

Aleksandar Pavlovic – 6.5

Needed to link the defense and midfield when Bayern had the ball and protect their defensive line when they didn’t, he did a largely competent job.

Konrad Laimer – 7

He showed tremendous energy down Bayern’s right and his direct running often pushed Villa back, although he was less confident when asked to defend.

Michael Olise – 6.5

The former Crystal Palace player found himself on the sidelines for most of the game, although he came very close to putting Bayern ahead shortly before half-time.

Alfonso Davies – 6.5

He tried to combine with Coman in the first half, but Konsa and Philogene did a good job with them. I had little trouble going the other way.

Serge Gnabry – 5.5

While Kane waited for the tag, he attempted to beat Martinez from a tight angle and charged into the crowd. Frustrated again by the Argentine star at the end.

Harry Kane – 5.5

He would have expected to cause Torres and Carlos more problems than he did.

Kingsley Coman – 5.5

He never managed to find a way past Konsa and was often forced to enter, where he also had little joy. Hooked for Musiala at half-time.

Kane would have hoped to have caused more problems for Diego Carlos and Pau Torres than on home soil.

Substitutes

Jamal Musiala (by Coman, 46) – 6

Surprisingly excluded from the starting XI, he attempted to give Bayern something extra in his attacking midfield role.

Leroy Sané (by Olise, 67) – 6

More of a direct player than Olise, the former Manchester City player gave Digne and Maatsen a lot to think about.

Joao Palhinha (by Pavlovic, 76) – 6

The summer signing from Fulham was asked to carry out the same tasks as Pavlovic.
