The bus was carrying students from Assumption College in Kilmore, north of Melbourne, when it crashed shortly after 3.30pm.

Its driver, 65, died at the scene.

There were about 32 students on board the bus. One of them suffered serious injuries and others suffered minor injuries.

A spokesperson for Assumption College said: “A number of students were treated for minor injuries at the scene by emergency services.

‘Everyone is expected to return home this afternoon.

‘Counseling and other support will be made available to students and families.

‘The school immediately notified all families and headteacher Paul Finneran and other staff traveled to the scene.

‘The School thanks the emergency services for their quick and professional response.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this accident.”

A traditional hero named Colby was among the first to arrive on the scene and told the Herald of the sun how he helped rescue dozens of students.

“When I got there, another guy and I jumped out the window and helped the kids out, even though I wasn’t sure about the bus driver,” he said.

“We broke one of the front emergency windows with the hammer, brought a ladder and helped them get off the top of the bus.”

Victoria Ambulance said: “Paramedics treated a child at the scene for a minor upper body injury and transported him to Kilmore Hospital in a stable condition.”

“About 30 other children on board were evaluated at the scene but did not require emergency transport by ambulance.”
