Ashley Cole says James Ward-Prowse showed ‘tremendous quality’ as he looks set to make Euro 2020 squad
Ashley Cole praises James Ward-Prowse’s ‘immense quality’ in England v Romania, as Southampton midfielder pleads to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Euro 2020
Ashley Cole has praised James Ward-Prowse as the Southampton man turned to stake his claim for England’s Euro 2020 squad in his first-half show against Romania.
Gareth Southgate has yet to decide who will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 26-man squad after the Liverpool fullback withdrew from the squad due to injury.

Cole said he had ‘stood’ a few appearances, including that of the Southampton midfielder.
He said at halftime with the score still scoreless: ‘It has been good. I noticed a few individual performances, but it was difficult to break down Romania.
“Ward-Prowse showed tremendous quality in some of the balls he delivered. He has played well so far.’
Cole’s fellow expert Ian Wright also praised Ben White, who is also hoping to get a late inclusion in the 26-man roster.

The former Arsenal striker said: ‘Ben White should also be given a mention. Ward-Prowse is that midfielder who wants to make a claim. He is tiger-like. He’s one of those chasing the ball down.’
Roy Keane, who was also part of the punditry team, described Ward-Prowse’s first half performance as professional.
Ward-Prowse lasted 65 minutes before being replaced by Declan Rice.
The void in the squad came after Alexander-Arnold suffered a late thigh injury on Wednesday in England’s 1-0 win over Austria.
There are five players on the standby list who could replace the fullback, with Ward-Prowse, White, Ben Godfrey, Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins all in the frame.
Southgate is expected to make its announcement within the next 24 hours.
