Emmerdale groundbreaking star Ash Palmisciano has reflected on the uphill battle he faced coming to terms with the death of his mother earlier this year.

Ash, 32, the soap opera’s first transgender actor, lost his mother Michelle at the age of 60 in May after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

speaking to MirrorThe star said he feels lucky to have had parents who showered him and his younger sister with love, insisting he was not prepared for the onslaught of grief that followed her death.

He said: ‘Mum was a real inspiration to all of us. She was not only an amazing mom to my sister Sophie and I, but she was also a fantastic wife and nanny.

‘Pain is a beast that is uncontrollable, and you are not ready for it. We don’t talk about loss and it is something we will all face in our lives. It’s been a terrible year and I’m finding it difficult.’

He also touched on how his transgender character from Emmerdale, Matty Barton, has had a hard time on the soap after finding out that his mother, Moira, and his girlfriend Amy have betrayed him.

The TV star also told Lorraine that when he first joined Emmerdale, his story was only supposed to last a few months before the bosses decided to keep him.

He said: ‘When I started it was a three-month contract, and to be there two years later is incredible.

‘I was doing whatever job I could. I was an elf at Christmas. When I got this job, I was very grateful.’
