Prince Christian of Denmark delighted crowds gathered this morning outside Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen to celebrate the heir to the throne’s 18th birthday.
The future king, who is considered one of Europe’s most eligible bachelors, will celebrate his big birthday tonight with a grand gala attended by many of Europe’s royal families.
Ahead of the festivities, well-wishers gathered in Copenhagen while the The royal family shared a series of heartwarming childhood photographs of Christian.
The never-before-seen footage, taken by the prince’s parents, Crown Princess Mary and Prince Frederik, documented a number of private memories.
The snaps included a trip to Paris, a visit to Australia, skiing, a game of tennis and “special times with grandpa” – the late Prince Henrik.

Other members of the royal family, including his cousin Count Nicholas, shared happy birthday messages to the future king.
The Danish Royal House also released an official birthday portrait of Prince Christian – taken by his mother – as well as a calendar of events.
“Congratulations to His Royal Highness Prince Christian, who today celebrates his 18th birthday,” the palace said in a statement.
“The official program for today’s celebration is as follows:
“At noon, the birthday boy appears on the balcony of Frederik VIII’s palace in Amalienborg with the family of the crown prince and Her Majesty the Queen.
“Everyone is invited to come to the castle square and take part in the celebration.
“At 5 p.m., the Queen will host a gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle, to which young people from Prince Christian’s generation will be invited,” reads the Instagram post.
Meanwhile, flags were raised across the country to honor the future king.

Arrangements are also being made for live television coverage of the event.
Details of the gala – including the dress code and some of the confirmed guests – are still emerging, with the prince apparently not wanting guests to bring him gifts and photos not being allowed.
The party, which promises to be one of the most glitzy events on the social calendar, will see hundreds of well-heeled guests from across the Commonwealth in attendance.
The presence has already been confirmed by a number of guests.

Prince Christian’s godfather, Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon, will be present at the gala, as will Haakin’s daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 19.
Another of Christian’s godfathers, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, has also confirmed her attendance, alongside her husband Prince Daniel and their 11-year-old daughter Princess Estelle.
Other European royals who could join them at the gala include Queen Maxima of the Netherlands with her husband King Willem Alexander, and their two eldest daughters, Princess Catharina-Amalia, 19, and Princess Alexia , 18 years old.
Other possible guests include Princess Leonor of Spain, 17, and Princess Elisabeth, 21, of Belgium.
Besides members of the royal family, guests are expected to include notable young people and representatives of youth organizations.
We know the guest list is long: the Danish Royal House recently posted a video on Instagram, showing hundreds of invitations being printed and put into envelopes before being sent out.
