I’m a lawyer: this driving tip could save your life in the event of an accident

A TikTok lawyer has posted a viral video sharing his driving tips that he says could save your life when you’re in your car.
Personal injury lawyer Adrianos Facchetti said a simple adjustment to your routine could help you better protect yourself in the event of an accident.
His big advice: “Stop sitting so close to the wheel. »
Facchetti, who founded the Adrianos Facchetti law firm in 2006, said it’s a simple mistake you may not even realize you’re making, but could mean the difference between an injury major or minor.
“When you got in your car today, you probably plugged in your iPhone or turned on your radio and if you’re a really careful driver, you might have checked your mirrors and adjusted them,” the lawyer said .
“But there’s one thing, I bet you haven’t done it and it could be the difference between a minor injury or a major injury and it’s so simple you’re going to say it can’t be that effective .”
He added that sitting too close to the wheel could have deadly consequences in the event of an accident.
“Did you know that airbags inflate at 200 miles per hour and produce up to 2,000 pounds of force? So if you sit too close to the steering wheel, the airbags can cause serious injuries, but that’s not all.
“If you are too close to your windshield, the glass can cut you in a collision and if the front of your car collapses, your steering wheel can even trap you in place,” the lawyer said.
Facchetti offered two simple solutions to prevent this from happening.
“Number one, you want to stay at least 10 inches away from your steering wheel and number two, make sure the face of your steering wheel is down. This will minimize serious impacts to the chest and face.
Some commenters insisted they had no choice but to sit close to the steering wheel due to their size.

Others suggest that wheel distance is a problem that automakers need to solve.

“Make cars with pedals suitable for small people.”
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analysis found that there were 39,508 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2021, in which 42,939 deaths occurred.
This resulted in 12.9 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.37 deaths per 100 million kilometers traveled.
