AI tools do not save workers time and have become as unpopular as the commute to the office, a survey suggests.

One survey found that for 52 percent of employees who use technology, it does not save them time or add more time to their work.

The findings contradict hopes that AI will provide a big productivity boost that could help lift the economy out of the doldrums.

“These much-hyped tools are proving to be a burden for workers in the field,” according to the survey by training provider Multiverse.

Generative AI tools learn by absorbing large amounts of data that allow them to produce human-like content, from poetry to computer code.

Proponents say it could transform much of the economy by allowing tasks to be completed more quickly and new scientific discoveries to be explored.

Ujjwal Singh, chief product and technology officer at Multiverse, said: “The power of generative AI in everything from healthcare to financial services to the automotive industry is incredible, but only if employees know how to harness it.”

“Right now, the gap between saying and doing, between the ambitions of leaders and the experience of workers, is enormous.”

The survey of 964 workers found that, on a scale of one to ten, the amount of “joy” that came from aspects of their work, the use of clunky artificial intelligence tools scored 4.55, lower than that of taking public transport to go to work in the morning, 4.57.

Small talk in front of the coffee machine was a more popular pastime.
