Arsenal are considering a double strike at Sheffield United for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and midfielder Sander Berge.

Mikel Arteta has been chasing Ramsdale for a while, but his interest in Berge has resurfaced after unofficial talks seemed to cool off earlier this year The star.

The Gunners are thought to be wary of the Blades’ £40m demand for Ramsdale, on the assumption that a £30m bid is more appropriate, but United are not moving.

As a compromise, however, Arsenal would be willing to make substantial offers for both Ramsdale and Berge, which the Blades, as a Championship club, would find it hard to refuse.

For his part, United manager Slavisa Jokanovic has made it clear that he has no intention of selling either player.

Speaking after the Blades’ 4-0 pre-season friendly win over Doncaster, he said: ‘If you ask me if I’ll sell, no. I am happy with their professionalism.

“I will be hurt if they leave my team. I understand this possibility exists, but I hope it won’t happen.’

Jokanovic added that both players are “lucky” in the preparation for the season, suggesting neither is hesitating to leave.

Arteta has made recruiting a new goalkeeper a top priority and was dealt a blow when Ajax stopper Andre Onana moved to Lyon for just £6.8million for north London.

The Gunners boss has already made three major purchases this summer, the most significant deal being the arrival of defender Ben White from Brighton for £50million.

Midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga and left-back Nuno Tavares have also joined, but Arteta is keen to get more players ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.
