Arsenal hero Nigel Winterburn urges Mikel Arteta to sign new right back, claiming Gunners boss doesn’t support Hector Bellerin or Cedric Soares to take the position
- Mikel Arteta switched between Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares this season
- Nigel Winterburn doesn’t think the Gunners boss is convinced by either player
- He has urged Arteta to sign a long-term right back like Tariq Lamptey
Nigel Winterburn expects Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to go out and sign a right back who can take the position with the Gunners.
Arteta switched between Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares this season and neither player impressed enough to become a regular first choice in defense.
And Arsenal legend Winterburn believes his old club would be significantly improved by an arrival that could bring more consistency to the starting line-up.
Neither Cedric Soares nor Hector Bellerin have made Arsenal’s right-back spot their own
Nigel Winterburn thinks Mikel Arteta should hire someone who can take over right back
Speak against GentingBetWinterburn said, ‘If you look at switching players in that position, you can see that Arteta is not comfortable with who he has, so I expect this will come up in the summer.
Arsenal has been associated with people like (Achraf) Hakimi and (Tariq) Lamptey. Whether or not they are good enough for the club cannot be decided until they have played 20-30 games. It doesn’t matter what they’ve accomplished in advance, they’re coming to a new league, club and environment, so they’ll have to prove themselves.
I’m not sure why Bellerin is in and out of the team. It’s clear he’s been struggling since returning from that major injury and he has always had those ties to Barcelona.
The fact that Arsenal has been linked with players in his position suggests that either Bellerin is looking for his next chance at Barcelona or that Arteta is not happy with him in that role. I imagine it is a combination of both. ‘
Calum Chambers came on as a right back against West Ham and his performance was so impressive that Jamie Carragher tweeted, saying it reminded him of Brazilian legend Cafu.
Nigel Winterburn believes a more consistent right back would help Arsenal improve
But Winterburn doesn’t expect Chambers to take the position permanently.
“Calum Chambers is not a straight back,” Winterburn said. ‘I don’t think he will make the right position backwards to move forward. Defensively, in a one-on-one situation, I would ask certain questions about him.
“Don’t forget that he was hailed for his time at Fulham by playing in the middle of midfield, where he impressed.”
Arsenal, ninth in the Premier League standings, are returning to action after the international break on April 3, when they meet Liverpool at the Emirates stadium.
