Goalkeeper Matt Turner has revealed that his love affair with Arsenal was sparked when he bought the video game FIFA… and they were the first team to hit the screen.

The US international exchanged MLS for the Premier League this summer, joining Mikel Arteta’s side of New England Revolution.

He was already an Arsenal fan, but fell in love with the Gunners as a teenager.

The American has been supporting the club he joined in the summer since his teenage years

The 28-year-old revealed: “After the World Cup in 2010, I bought my first game from FIFA and it said: ‘Which club would you like to support or select?’ – of course ‘A’ came up first and Arsenal were there! But I also made that connection because my sisters both played for a local club team called The Arsenal, so I made that connection there and stuck with it.”

Turner got up early to watch Arsenal matches and was later sucked into the ‘pub culture’ of football fandom.

“Obviously there were great times in the early 2010s to be an Arsenal fan and I got up early depending on when kick-off was,” he said.

The 28-year-old has been playing Aaron Ramsdale’s deputy since his arrival in North London

His minutes are limited to Europa League matches, and he is ready to play again this week

“The 12:30 kick-off here was 7:30 (in the US), so whenever Arsenal were playing I did my best to watch. When I got a little older, I got into the New York City pub culture and also been around the fans for that kind of atmosphere.”

Turner came as a backup to Aaron Ramsdale and his chances are limited to the Europa League so far.

The American will start the game with PSV on Thursday, when Arsenal can secure passage to the knockout phase with a win.
