Arsenal defender Daniel Ballard joins Burnley in a £2million deal.

Arsenal have also agreed on a resale clause and a matching sale price clause for the 22-year-old Northern Ireland international who was previously loaned to Blackpool and Millwall.

It would be Vincent Kompany’s first part of the incoming first-team transfer business as Clarets boss, and also a crucial asset after seeing centre-backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski leave.

Gunner’s academy product Ballard has never played competitively for North London but has made an impression on loan at Bloomfield Road and The Den.

He made 33 appearances for Millwall from the Championship last season and initially impressed in 30 League One appearances for Blackpool in 2020/21.

That also applies to the 15 caps he has earned for his country after his 2020 debut in the Nations League against Romania.

Another Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares is a loan target for Marseille.

The Portuguese U21 international only joined the Gunners last summer on a £6.8m deal from Benfica, but had a mixed first season in English football.

Atalanta and Real Sociedad have also shown interest, with the Italian side admitting their interest earlier this week but hinting they could be priced out of a move.

Lee Congerton, Serie A senior recruitment manager, said: “I’ve been following Tavares since he played for Benfica’s youth team, he’s a strong player.

“But Tavares is under contract with Arsenal and it is really difficult to attract players from Premier League clubs.”

Arsenal are believed to be open to loaning Tavares for the season, but any step will likely depend on their success in bringing in a replacement as the Gunners are still pursuing a deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.
