  • Mikel Arteta would be on the hunt for a left-footed central defender this summer

Arsenal have reportedly turned down the chance to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji.

Akanji, 26, who has reportedly fallen out of favor with the club following the resignation of Marco Rose and the acquisitions of Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck, is being touted by his representatives at clubs in the Premier League.

According to the mirrorHowever, Arsenal have turned down the chance to bring the international from Switzerland to the Emirates.

The centre-back, an international team-mate of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, is reportedly not the defender Mikel Arteta wants this summer.

The young manager is believed to want a left-footed center back to cover Gabriel, while right-footed Frenchman William Saliba returns from his successful loan spell at Marseille.

Dortmund’s asking price of around £21million for Akanji is not expected to make the defender any more attractive to the north London club as they try to navigate a tough market in which they have missed out on Champions League football.

Arsenal have been helped by Saliba’s willingness to return, with the Frenchman admitting that he “belongs” to Arsenal and that, with two years left on his current contract, his immediate future lies with Arsenal.

“I belong to Arsenal, I still have two years to go,” said Saliba.

“I’m coming back to Arsenal. I’ve played zero games and I still want to show them my true face and have the chance to play for these fans and this great club.

“But it doesn’t just depend on me. In any case, it would be a shame to leave like this.’

It is likely that Saliba will compete with Ben White for the spot on the right, while Arteta scours the market for suitable competition for Gabriel.

The future of Rob Holding amid rumors of Arsenal moves for various defensive targets is unclear.

Manchester United have also been linked with Akanji, but it looks like Erik ten Hag will try to work out other problem areas before stepping up his rear.

Frenkie de Jong and Ajax striker Antony are among a host of names touted for a move to Manchester United this summer.
