If things weren’t bad enough for Arsenal fans after their 3-0 loss to Brighton on Sunday virtually handed the Premier League title to Manchester City, then a new stat won’t offer much condolence.
The Gunners had hoped to end their nearly 20-year wait for a Premier League crown, with their young stars thriving under manager Mikel Arteta, but fell through at a critical time in the season.
They are four points behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who have a game in hand and show no signs of slipping in their bid for a third successive Premier League title.
Arsenal had beaten all previous expectations before the start of the season and it has been revealed that the Gunners have led for 93% of the current campaign, according to Sports Bible.
This sets a new record for the longest period a team has sat atop the English top-flight table without winning the league.

Rival fans have mocked the Gunners for their latest achievement which saw them miss out on a fourth top-flight English title.
One comment mocked Arsenal, posting online: “Proof they are the original bottle dealers.”
Another added: “Don’t get me wrong I hate Man City but this is one of the funniest jobs ever.”
The Gunners broke their own record which had carried them for 71% of their 2002/03 campaign as Arsene Wenger’s side were overtaken by Manchester United in the latter stages of the season.
United won the Premier League with a five-point difference as Arsenal had to accept a second-place finish.
Unsurprisingly, they also hold the record for third place for the same stat after enjoying more than half of the season at the top before being beaten again by United.
Liverpool recently suffered a similar fate, with Manchester City beating them to the Premier League crown by a single point after leading for 51% of the season.
Arsenal complete the unfortunate top five in the table after dropping to a fourth place in 2014 despite spending 48% of the season at the top of the Premier League tree.
