Lautaro Martinez is reportedly close to signing a new contract with Inter Milan, meaning Arsenal and Tottenham will have to spend a lot of money if they decide to rekindle their interest in the striker.

Both clubs in north London are said to have submitted bids for the 24-year-old this summer, with Tottenham in particular keen to bring the Argentina international to the Premier League.

However, the £97.5m sale of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea meant that Inter’s financial worries were eased, and they had little desire to cash in on Martinez as well.

Inter would demand £85m for the Argentina international if the new deal is confirmed with

It now looks like it will be even harder to get rid of him, with Gazzetta dello Sport The striker reports a new five-year contract with Inter before the end of the season.

It is believed the Italian club would ask £85 million to sell Martinez if he signed the contract extension, whose current deal expires in 2023.

That means the striker will enter the final year of his contract next summer, but a new deal now seems likely and that would significantly strengthen Inter’s hand.

Martinez missed the first Serie A game of the season, but has since scored in both games against Verona and Sampdoria.

Although Lukaku was Inter’s main man last season, as they won their first Serie A title in over a decade, the Argentine striker was still a major factor under Antonio Conte.

He scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists, forming a formidable partnership with the Belgian in an incredibly successful system.

This season, under new manager Simone Inzaghi, he has a new partner at the top of the field. Edin Dzeko joined the club in the summer on a two-year contract and has started all of his new side’s games so far this season.

The 35-year-old and Martinez lead Inter in their Champions League campaign, with Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Sheriff Tiraspol in their group.

Both Real and Shakhtar were in Inter’s group last season, when the Italian side finished last, taking just one win in six games.
