The Army veteran is furious with Carvana after the police impound the $68k Maserati he bought for his wife after the mechanic discovered it was stolen and three years older than he thought.

  • Jason Scott Scammed Out of $68,000 After Buying a Second-Hand Car From Carvana
  • Police have since impounded the vehicle and Scott has fought to obtain compensation from the retailer.
  • Carvana faces multiple legal challenges that primarily have to do with the way it handles vehicle inspection paperwork.

An Army veteran has revealed he was scammed out of $68,000 after buying a second-hand car that turned out to be stolen.

Jason Scott was looking to surprise his wife with the 2021 Maserati SUV that had been falsely advertised on used car site Carvana in November.

But when the couple took their car to a local Maserati dealer for an inspection in February, just four months after buying it, they learned it had been stolen.

Carvana said the case was a rare incident of a “sophisticated” scam.

Scott, of Moore County, North Carolina, said WTVD: ‘It was exciting that he was coming down the hill, waiting for him outside, everything was fine.’

However, after the mechanics inspected the vehicle, they informed him of the problem.

“That’s when they found out the vehicle was stolen,” he said.

‘When they checked the VIN number on the chassis, that’s when they saw it was a stolen vehicle. VIN on the car, on the window and the car door was different.

The police seized and confiscated the vehicle, WTVD informed.

However, when he tried to seek compensation from a Carvana representative, they refused.

‘She said ok we can’t return the vehicle until you return it. I said I can’t return the vehicle. I said the police have the vehicle,” Scott said.

Scott seeks $1 million compensation from the thrift site for financial and reputational losses.

The company reportedly denies any knowledge that the vehicle was stolen and has apologized.

Now he is working with Scott to either repay the money he spent on the purchase or receive a new vehicle in exchange.

But Scott demands that the company implement better security controls to make sure it doesn’t happen to another customer.

‘I know they say they have 150 point inspections. I want them to have 151. Check if the vehicle is stolen,’ he said.

“The last thing I want someone to do is get caught late at night on some weird country road and they can’t check it out and see that person as a criminal.”

A Carvana spokesperson told WhatsNew2Day.com: “This is a sophisticated criminal act and we are taking all necessary steps to make it right for our client in this rare case.”

Caravana celebrated its tenth anniversary last month.

It is marketed for its optimal convenience, as it allows customers to buy cars entirely over the Internet.
