Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo had to endure a disgusting sideline moment before sparking a stunning revival in the Peach Bowl on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old inspired a stunning comeback for the Sun Devils against Texas before the team ultimately fell short in a 39-31 overtime thriller.
And while the finish of the matchup for Arizona didn’t end in fairytale fashion, the start of Skattebo’s match wasn’t entirely smooth sailing either.
The Longhorns defense did an excellent job of holding off Arizona’s offense through the first two quarters and tensions seemed to boil over on the Sun Devils’ sideline.
Skattebo was caught yelling at his teammates and angrily hitting his helmet as the Sun Devils, already down several scores to Texas, continued to struggle.
Still, things went from bad to worse for Skattebo, who finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting last month, when he lost his lunch.
Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo was “vomiting profusely” on the sideline
The ESPN broadcast reported that the offensive star was “vomiting profusely” on the sideline during the fourth quarter.
However, Skattebo’s disgusting sideline moment seemed to have eased some of the tension as he came into his own.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Skattebo and Arizona finally managed to get their first touchdown on the board.
On fourth-and-2 from the Texas 42-yard line, Skattebo took a pitch and then threw a pass to Malik McClain, before the Sun Devils secured the two-point conversion to make the score 24-16 with 6:31 left. .
That was not the end of his exploits. After a Quinn Ewers interception, Skattebo caught a 62-yard pass from Leavitt. He then capped off the drive by making his way into the end zone to cut the lead to 24-22 before tying the game by scoring the two-point conversion.
He also put his team ahead for the first time all day with a three-yard touchdown run to start overtime against No. 4 Texas.
Skattebo finished with two rushing touchdowns and seven receptions for 86 yards.
The star brushed off the difficult moment and delivered a stunning revival of Peach Bowl
The Sun Devils’ comeback ultimately fell short as they suffered an overtime loss to Texas
The Sun Devils couldn’t upset the Longhorns, however, as an interception by Andrew Makuba finally ended a Peach Bowl quarterfinal classic in double overtime.
Arizona was on the verge of winning when Texas faced fourth-and-13 on its first possession of overtime. But Quinn Ewers saw Matthew Golden break free behind two defenders and run in a 28-yard touchdown.
After moving to the other side of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, on the next play, Ewers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helms, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Golden.
The Longhorns finally put away Arizona State (11-3) when Makuba picked off Sam Leavitt’s pass at the 3 to end the game.
