Bystanders frantically used shovels and a front-end loader to rescue a man after he was buried under several tonnes of grain.

The man, 34, was buried after a metal silo failed at Arcturus in Queensland’s Central Highlands region on Wednesday morning.

Sheet metal from the damaged silo also fell on the buried man.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene, which is three hours west of Rockhampton, to find bystanders working to keep the 34-year-old’s head above the grain.

Firefighters, police and paramedics worked for hours to free the man, who suffered significant injuries to his legs and feet in the incident.

The grain silo allegedly failed and released several tons of grain, as well as metal sheets, onto the man. It took hours to rescue the 34-year-old man who suffered significant injuries to his legs and feet.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) critical care paramedic Kirsty Berger arrived at the scene by rescue helicopter. 7News reported.

“Between the call and our arrival, bystanders had been working to remove the grain with shovels and also a front-end loader, to try to keep the patient free of grain as much as possible,” he said.

‘Initial QAS teams found the patient was tightly trapped in grain and debris, but conscious and in a stable condition.

“It was a very lengthy release due to his entrapment, with a lot of help from bystanders, QFES, QAS, QPS and the Rescue 300 crew.”

Once freed, the RACQ CapRescue helicopter took the 34-year-old man to Rockhampton Hospital around midday.

Berger said the rescued man was in “very good spirits” and was “grateful.”
