With the arrival of the iPhone 12, Apple has redefined the MagSafe branding for a new wireless charging system for its smartphones. MagSafe cases made by Apple are already available, and it looks like more are on the way.
Spotted a new Apple patent Apparently Apple shows a folio style case with built-in MagSafe charging options. Magnets embedded in the case would allow wireless charging with a MagSafe adapter.
Interestingly, there are also two designs with slots that you can slide your AirPods into and charge them from the same case. When it’s time to head out, you’ll have both your smartphone and wireless earbuds fully charged and ready to go.
These sketches also show space for a built-in battery, giving you a briefcase and portable power pack in one. Apple has previously created such case and battery combinations for the iPhone 11 and older models, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a new one.
The patent documentation also includes a MagSafe-ready folio case design for the iPad, suggesting that the charging technology will soon make its way to Apple’s tablet line. Apple hasn’t said anything about that yet, but it’s the logical next step.
However, as always with patents, we must emphasize that many patent ideas never appear in finished products. They are good indicators of the way a company thinks, but they do not represent fully realized technology.
That said, it makes sense for Apple to develop new MagSafe accessories this way, and since Apple already has MagSafe cases on offer, this shouldn’t be too annoying. Integrated AirPods charging is the most notable new feature.
Preorders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are open now (shipping on October 23), but you’ll have to wait until November 6 to write your name down for an iPhone 12 mini or an iPhone 12 Pro Max (shipping for that aircraft are scheduled for release November 13).
