Apple customers say that the $ 250 AirPods Pro firmware update kills the noise canceling function of the earbuds
- Customers say that noise reduction has taken a dive in the AirPods Pro
- The inferior capacity may be due to a tandem of firmware updates
- Reddit users report that they hear more ambient noise on trains, planes and more
- Bose and Sony have similar problems with noise reduction
Apple customers say that firmware updates for Apple’s popular earbuds, the AirPods Pro, are killing one of the product’s biggest selling points.
According to a report from The Verge, reports about a reduced ability to block out environmental noise – noise reduction – online forums have been flooded after a tandem of firmware updates.
Several editors in a recent post say they have noticed a notable difference in premium earbuds after a firmware update in December.
An analysis by Rtings.com shows that the reports may be more than just anecdotes. In a test that assessed the AirPods before and after a recent firmware update, researchers discovered the ability of the wireless earbuds to eliminate noise.
Apple’s AirPod’s pro retail for $ 250 and praised their superior ability to suppress ambient noise compared to other wireless earbud competitors
“After the update to Firmware 2C54, we re-tested the headphones and our results showed a fairly significant decrease in insulation performance, especially in the bass range,” Rtings.com writes in a review this month.
“This means that with [ambient noise cancelling] switched on, these headphones will not be nearly as good at blocking the low engine noise of aircraft or buses as before this update. This assessment reflects these changes. “
That assessment is confirmed by at least a few customers reddit who complain about hearing more ambient noise from the New York City subway or from an airplane after the firmware update.
“I cannot prove that they have reduced it [ambient noise cancelling] but I can tell you that I hear more noise during my drive home. Where total silence prevailed, I can now record more ambient noise. Could it be in my mind? Of course, “writes Reddit users. “But there are plenty of people who say the same …”

As noted by The Verge, other companies, including Bose and Sony, also face similar problems in their noise reduction devices.
The problems with Bose are clear enough that the company is now visiting customers at home to solve and solve the problem.
Unfortunately, for AirPods Pro owners who want to prevent firmware issues, the company does not allow users to log out.
Firmware updates take place silently and automatically in the background of the product and do not give customers much information about what is being changed.
