An advert for a rental property in London has sparked outrage online after tenants presented a list of stringent requirements for their future roommates.
Earlier this week, Natty Kasambala, a writer from London, posted screenshots of the Dalston apartment advert on X, formerly known as Twitter, after spotting it on a Facebook group .
The listing, written by the couple currently living there, explains how they are looking for someone who “hates overly fried food” and whose toiletries can fit in a “single wooden box” to occupy the guest bedroom.
Describing the property, they wrote: “We are looking for a professional to occupy a spacious bedroom in a two-bed apartment.
‘The room is furnished (…) The apartment has very high ceilings, parquet floors and large windows. It is a south-east facing apartment which gets extremely bright during the day.

Describing their dream roommate, the couple continued: “You will be considerate, tidy and clean, preferably with a minimalist attitude.
“You will have your own dishes, cooking utensils and pots, which must fit in a cupboard assigned to you.
“You’ll hate over-fried food that stinks up the place.” Your personal belongings in the bathroom must fit in a wooden box provided.
Admitting that this may seem “the strictest”, they added: “We try to keep the apartment clutter-free as this apartment has no storage space and everything is exposed.
Giving an insight into their lives, the pair continued: “You will share your life with a professional couple. We smoke in the apartment and there may be cats around because I sometimes play cat.
They signed the message by writing: “No deposit required but at least two weeks’ notice if you wish to move at any time.”

One outraged user responded: “Why do I feel like if my flannel or shampoo stuck out the top of the box they would throw it away while I was away and then act like it was their fault?”
Another added: “When I see things like this I’m really grateful for their transparency because there’s just *no way* I live with someone who’s afraid of a little smelly food.”
“We’re looking for a PROFESSIONAL, not some stupid, boring little student,” joked a third. “But we’ll act like the world’s most boring college roommates ourselves.”
A fourth joked: “They’re vampires.” Fried food is just a cover for the lack of garlic. The wooden box is a coffin. The ashes you see aren’t from their cigarettes, but from when the apartment got too bright.
Meanwhile, a fifth took issue with tenants not wanting their flatmate to cook ‘smelly food’ when they smoke inside – writing: ‘I hate it when over fried food blocks the cigarette smell wet in an apartment x »
“Everyone reading this should book a tour and then cancel it 10 minutes before,” another joked.
