Former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has explained how Mateo Kovacic played a pivotal role in encouraging him to move to Real Madrid.

Rudiger was officially unveiled as a Madrid player on Monday morning after signing a four-year deal with the Bernabeu following the expiration of his Chelsea contract.

The centre-back recently explained how he “talked to Kovacic” and that the midfielder told him he would “enjoy” the LigaLiga giants.

Speaking with Spanish news channel marcaRudiger said it was his former Chelsea team-mate who convinced him to make the move to LaLiga.

Ruidger said Kovacic – who used to play for Real Madrid – told him it was the “right move” to do and insisted that he “enjoy himself” playing alongside players like Luka Modric.

Ruidger spoke to the press about the decision-making behind the move, revealing: “To be honest I haven’t talked too much with Toni Kroos about it here.

The 29-year-old added: “I talked more with Mateo Kovacic about Real Madrid and he told me a lot.

‘And because he talks a lot with’ [Luka] Modric, and thanks to him, I spoke to him and he told me, ‘You’re going to like it here, it’s the right step to do.’

“I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about Madrid. I’m looking forward to getting started.’

The LaLiga giants confirmed Rudiger’s move from Chelsea to Real Madrid more than two weeks ago, but the German defender was absent from international duty, so a reveal had to be postponed.

When he returned from his international service, he went to the Madrid training complex to be presented to the media.

It has been revealed that Rudiger will wear the number 22 for Real Madrid, which will be released after Isco’s departure this summer.

During the unveiling, Rudiger told reporters: “It’s a very special day for all of us, but especially for me.

“I want to thank my parents, because without them I wouldn’t be here. They have always supported me and that has been very important my whole life.

“I also want to thank the president of Real Madrid for giving me the opportunity to play for this great club. I can promise you that I will give everything for this club. I want to win as many titles as possible. Hala Madrid and nothing else!’

Rudiger’s contract with the LaLiga side will be worth around £315,000 a week and he will also come with a hefty signing fee.

It means the dazzling financial package is worth considerably more than the £230,000 a week deal Chelsea offered him to extend his five-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, sources close to the deal have indicated that Rudiger’s release clause in Madrid will be €400m.
