Antonio Conte warns his Tottenham players he will ‘evaluate’ them after their dismal defeat

Antonio Conte is warning his underperforming Tottenham players that he will ‘make my assessments’ of them before January after their embarrassing defeat in the Europa Conference League.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has warned his underperforming players that they will all face trial after their embarrassing night in the Europa Conference League.

The Spurs were beaten 2-1 by Slovenian minnows NK Mura – the lowest-ranked club in the third tier of European competition having only formed in 2012 and having lost all four of their previous matches – as the magnitude of the task faced by Conte had inherited was uncovered.

The Italian said after the defeat that after playing the part for just three weeks he can now understand what he is dealing with and that Spurs are at a ‘not so high’ level.

With the January transfer window approaching, Conte is evaluating his squad before reporting back to the club, which could be bad news for some players on Thursday night.

“I’ll make my evaluations and then I’ll speak to the club, but I’m ready to keep working this way,” said Conte.

‘But it is important that we know that the situation is not simple, simple, no. It’s not enough to do this [clicks fingers] and change the situation.

“We need time, we need passion, we need work and that’s what I’m here for. It doesn’t mean we have to change much. I’m ready to do what the club wants to do. But now the situation is very clear.’

The defeat to Mura, who is fifth in the Slovenian league and had to play in Maribor because their stadium is not big enough to host matches in UEFA competitions, marks the low point of the Spurs’ fall.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, they challenged for top domestic honours, while also reaching the Champions League final in 2019.

Then it went south quickly and neither Jose Mourinho nor Nuno Espirito Santo could stop the slide.

In Conte they have appointed a series winner, who has won a league title with Juventus, Chelses and Inter Milan, but a man who will take no prisoners.

And in his heated press conference after Tottenham’s night of embarrassment, he was eager for his message about the club’s plight to be heard.

“We definitely need players with the right mentality and quality, players who deserve to play for Tottenham and strive to be competitive, to fight for this shirt, to win something,” he said. “We definitely need this.

“Frankly, I’ve been working with the team for three or four weeks now and I want to tell you that I have found a great dedication, a great ability and there is the will, the desire to improve, but now more time has passed and I I make my evaluations directly, not through the TV or through other people, but directly, and we definitely need to improve a lot to close the gap with the top teams.

‘I want to be honest. I repeat, I am not afraid to face this situation, but it is important that everyone understands.’

The Spurs will have the chance to come back when they visit Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.

After bringing a full roster to Europe, Conte will judge the players on Friday and Saturday prior to the trip to Turf Moor.

Cristian Romero (hamstring) is definitely out, while Giovani Lo Celso (knock) and Steven Bergwijn (illness) are judged.
