Antoine Griezmann pulled no punches when Alexis Sánchez missed a penalty during a dramatic shootout that saw Atlético Madrid reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Jan Oblak was the hero as the LaLiga giants beat Inter Milan 3-2 on penalties at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night.

Hakan Calhanoglu scored and Memphis Depay, whose goal in the 87th minute rescued Atlético and forced the game into extra time, emphatically scored the first two penalties.

The Serie A giants then blinked first when Sánchez sent a tame effort down the middle, which Oblak saved.

As Atlético’s players celebrated, Griezmann, who was watching from the bench, turned to Rodrigo De Paul shouting: “He (Sánchez) is shit, the Chilean is shit!”

The exchange was captured by Movistar Plus cameras, which filmed the penalties from the other side of the field.

After Sánchez’s miss, Yann Sommer saved Saúl before Oblak made his second save of the penalty shootout by parrying Davy Klaassen’s kick.

Rodrigo Riquelme scored and so did Francesco Acerbi, before Ángel Correa took Atlético’s fourth penalty past Sommer and Inter captain Lautaro Martínez dodged his effort to send the hosts home.

“In the end, it’s a little bit of luck on penalties,” Oblak said.

‘Because you have to choose the right side and you have to make the stop. If the player executes the shot perfectly, it is impossible to stop it.

“Fortunately I was able to make the stops. What matters is the victory and having reached the quarterfinals.”

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Atlético found themselves trailing when Federico Dimarco put last season’s Champions League finalists ahead in the first half, only for Griezmann to restore parity two minutes later.

The Frenchman had recovered from an injury suffered in the first leg to score his sixth goal of the season in the Champions League, making him joint top scorer alongside Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

“He was moving,” Simeone said.

“I’m happy for the players and the fans. We are once again among the eight best teams in Europe. That says a lot about this club.”

Diego Simeone said his team’s dramatic victory over the Serie A leaders was “moving”

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi admitted that his team, who arrived at the Metropolitano enjoying a run of 13 consecutive victories and were unbeaten in their last 15 consecutive games in all competitions, would look back on the result as a missed opportunity.

“We should be proud of what we did in this Champions League,” he said.

‘In the second half we should have done better. In extra time we had more energy but unfortunately we made too many mistakes.’
