An Antiques Roadshow guest was shocked to discover the enormous value of a book he owned after finding it in a rubbish tip, before purchasing it online.

In the latest episode of the BBC series, members of the public brought their prized possessions to Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff.

And expert Clive Farahar was amazed by a gentleman’s “striking and extraordinary” leather-bound genealogical book featuring his wife’s hand-painted family tree, which turned out to be from the late 19th century.

The guest explained: “I first saw this on the internet less than a year ago and it’s about the Hughes family and their ancestry, which my wife belongs to.”

He went on to tell how the online seller said he had been found in a tip in North Wales more than 35 years ago.

And expert Clive Farahar was amazed by a gentleman’s “striking and extraordinary” leather-bound genealogy book featuring his wife’s family tree and which turned out to be from the late 19th century.

Astonished expert Clive asked: ‘So this valuable manuscript with its family was found on a trail?’ Had someone just thrown it away?’

Before gushing, “I think (the book is) extraordinary, I mean you’ve got about 200 pages here, packed with every relationship you can possibly have.”

“And here it is, beautifully bound, it has a sturdy mark, found on one end.”

Despite calling it “priceless”, Clive said the item could fetch £1,500 at auction.

Surprised, the man, with a radiant smile, asked: ‘Really?’

It comes after a schoolboy was similarly surprised by the value of his genie lamp in a previous episode.

The young man arrived at Roundhay Park in Leeds, where he brought a sterling silver teapot he had found on the side of the road in a box marked “free”.

The boy, believed to be the youngest guest on the long-running series, did not reveal his name, but the antique teapot was marked with the letter G, which is his initial.

Revealing more about the history of the teapot, expert Lagina Austin explained: ‘It’s what they call a demitasse teapot, which would be used for coffee rather than tea. And this was probably part of a set.

And the G in there is probably the last name of whoever it belonged to at some point. You are right that it is sterling silver.

When Lagina told the young man that the value of the antique was between £200 and £300, he couldn’t believe his luck.

The young man appeared on the BBC’s Sunday teatime show when he arrived at Roundhay Park in Leeds, where he brought a sterling silver teapot he had found on the side of the road in a box marked “free”.

He exclaimed, ‘Wow, something I found on the side of the road.’ That is incredible.’

The clip soon went viral on TikTok with social media users flocking to the comments to praise the smart young man.

One said: ‘This kid has the enunciation I’ve been trying to achieve for 53 years.’

Another added: “What an intelligent and articulate young man.”

Moments before the assessment took place, the boy explained that he had wanted to appear on television since he was five years old.
