Police officers were attacked this afternoon by anti-vaccination protesters outside the Houses of Parliament as traffic came to a halt amid violent scenes.
Video footage showed punches being thrown and bottles rushing at officers as they urged protesters to leave the road in 29°C heat.
Activists chanted “shame on the police” and “arrest Boris Johnson” as they made their way from Parliament Square onto the road and towards the gates of the Palace of Westminster.
Among the protesters was Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has been a regular part of anti-lockdown protests since the start of the pandemic.

A police officer was seen putting a lock on a gate at the entrance to parliament, while those outside holding signs with anti-vaccination and anti-police messages.
Scotland Yard said agents responded to protesters in Parliament Square after those taking part in an anti-vaccination demonstration blocked a road in the area.
Police tweeted: ‘We are responding to a demonstration in Parliament Square this afternoon. A group has blocked the road, causing traffic disruption.
“Officers are on the scene, speaking to those taking part in the protest and trying to clear the congestion as quickly as possible.”

It comes at a time when Boris Johnson is calling on people to exercise their newfound freedoms with caution as most of the mandatory lockdown restrictions in England are finally lifted.
Social distancing rules that, in one form or another, have been controlling people’s lives for over a year finally ended at one minute past midnight this morning.
Face masks are no longer mandatory in shops and in public transport, the restrictions on gatherings have disappeared and work from home guidance has stopped.
Nightclubs, theaters and restaurants can fully reopen, while pubs are no longer limited to table service only.

But with Covid-19 cases continuing to rise and renewed warnings about pressure on the NHS, there was no party spirit in the government.
Johnson is spending so-called ‘freedom day’ in self-isolation at his official country retreat in Checkers after being ‘pinged’ by NHS Test and Trace.
This follows a contact with Health Minister Sajid Javid, who subsequently tested positive for the virus on Saturday.
Meanwhile, companies have warned of shortages on the shelves as the number of people out of work after being pinged by the NHS Covid app continues to rise.
